What inspires you to buy the clothes you buy, or the home wares that adorn your house?. What is it that ultimately makes you, you?.
I find that there is inspiration in many things I see, people on the street, television or friends. I’m not a huge fan of glossy fashion magazines, I find them to be full of adverts with not a lot of substance. Pretty to look at but not much good otherwise!. Plus there a huge waste of money. For fashion / style inspiration I need look no further than what I see in everyday life. Instagram is proving to be a great source of inspiration and motivation. Seeing what other women, the everyday women are wearing and how they’ve styled simple outfits is fantastic. I also love looking at celebrities and swooning over their looks. But I know that the reality of my life means I’ll never be able to afford the beautiful designer label clothes they have and that’s ok! The challenge to find something similar at a much more affordable price gives me a huge buzz!
Now don’t get me wrong, as much as I love a great bargain or sale I have also been known to splurge a few hundred dollars on a classic evening dress that I know I’ll get the wear out of! Same goes for those key items we all have in our wardrobes, a great pair of jeans or pants, a winter coat (or two) a fabulous shirt and of course a killer pair of heels!
At the moment in particular I find myself experimenting more with colour and patterns, trying different styles of clothing and jewelry. I’m a less is more type of person naturally but I’m getting bolder with my choices! It’s amazing what you can find in your wardrobe when you look at it with a fresh pair of eyes and some motivation.
But for everyday items, I’ll continue to shop at K-mart, Target, Big W and Best and Less. For me the way you style simple pieces is how you can take an outfit from drab to fab!
The same goes for our home. Inspiration is abound with the popularity of shows like The Block and House Rules. Again, they would have much bigger budgets than I probably would have but I take the ideas I get from t.v and magazines and figure out how to translate those looks into our house for much less.
Last year we renovated out kitchen and re-did our floors. This was the last piece of our renovating puzzle and I waited eight years to do the kitchen! I was absolutely in my element choosing benches, cabinet colours, splashbacks and flooring. I’m lucky enough to have my own kitchen expert as hubby is a cabinetmaker. We quite often joke that he makes it all, i.e., he does all the hard work and I breeze in at the end and make everything look pretty! That’s what I do, it’s what I love! The styling up after it’s all completed. Sourcing the little things that make a house a home. Our kitchen is still a work in progress (hubby would say we’re done!) but I’m still tweaking!
K-mart at the moment has so much awesome home wares at ridiculously affordable prices it’s not even funny! And with all the EOFY sales there is so much good stuff around, I just keep an eye out wherever I go!
One thing I am eager to do more of after the school holidays is op-shopping. I’m going to make it my mission to stake out A LOT of second-hand shops. I’ll keep you posted with what I find.
What about you? What are your favourite shops for fashion and housewares?
